› Frequently Asked Questions
How do I monitor traffic statistics?
After you click the "Make Short URL" button, A line will appear that says: "Track how many people click your tiny link here" Clicking here will take you to the traffic stats Web page for that Tiny URL. Each Tiny URL has its own statistics page (with unique ID and code). This is where you can trace your newly made link. Unfortunately, if you lose this URL to your statistics page it is not retrievable at this time.
How do I create a custom URL?
If Custom box is left blank, the default link created will be 5 random characters. But you have the option of entering a keyword or phrase into this box to give the URL a specific alias or nickname. It will be http://p1.fr/nickname. If the nickname is too short or already taken, then additional characters will be automatically added to this nickname.
Automatically shorten address of the page I am currently on?
Have instant access to link shortening anywhere you go on the internet! First drag and drop Tiny onto your Firefox toolbar. Once Tiny is on your Firefox toolbar or in your Bookmarks, you can shorten from the site you are visiting. A tiny link will be created for the URL currently in your address bar, with just a mouse click. You won't need to copy and paste that URL into our site first, it will be done automatically.
Why isn't the Tiny URL automatically copied to my clipboard?
This is a convenient new feature. After clicking "Make Short URL" a short URL is generated and at the same this new URL is automatically copied to your computer's clipboard. All that's left is to paste it where you need it. This feature was designed to work with most browser types and versions. But if it doesn't work with your browser, then you might need to go back to the old method: just right click on the URL and then left click Copy.
How does the preview page work?
When users click on a short link they are first directed to a preview page that displays a thumbnail image plus the full, long URL of the destination - giving users a glimpse of the destination means they do not need to blindly visit any pages. Since short URLs can be used to mask spam, this preview feature helps discourage link spamming. But there are times when a preview page is just unacceptable. In that case, please contact us with a request for your tinylink go directly to its destination.
Will a short URL ever expire?
The short links that we provide will never expire as long as they are active. "Active" simply means clicked on at least once per year. If it receives no clicks within one year of its last usage, the link will be automatically deleted. Since short URLs are sometimes made for one-time or limited use, our procedure of deleting dead links is only meant to filter out such disposable URLs... keeping the database open for your active URLs.
What does the .fr mean?
".fr" suffix is the top-level domain for France. It is commonly used as an alternative to the ".com" suffix for french commercial Web sites. Although p1.fr resides in the France, the use of a .fr domain allowed for a very descriptive and short name. Our typical shortened URL will average only 20 characters long - most other shortening services found on the Web commonly exceed 20 characters.
P1.fr has become one of the most popular Websites to shorten or customize long web addresses and track their interest levels; now receiving millions of hits per month.
URL Basics
Uniform Resource Locater is used to specify addresses on the World Wide Web. A URL is the basic identifier for any resource found on the Web (hypertext pages, audio files and images). Here are some advantages to a short or custom URL:
• People sometimes guess the domain name of sites they have not visited before; so pick a name that describes your blog, company or brand.
• Even when people have been to a site before, they will often try to guess or remember the site name instead of using a bookmark or history list; so create a memorable domain name that is easy to spell.
• Shorter URLs are better since people often type them manually.
• Social interface to the Web relies on email and networking sites. When users recommend web pages to each other, email and bookmarking sites are second only to search engines; so shorter is better. URLs greater than 78 characters long will usually wrap across a line feed, increasing likelihood of breaking.
• Some email clients impose a length limit at which lines are automatically broken; requiring the user to paste a long URL back together, rather than just clicking on it. A short URL alias is much less likely to be broken.
